Sharing Content Is Becoming Easier and Easier

I love buttons.  Especially when they help you and your readers share your content.  But one thing that has driven me nuts is how long they took to load.

I just got an email from Arthur telling us about their service – Tell A Friend.  The Tell A Friend button is a nice addition to any site – especially one that has dramatic, viral type content.  It’s a quick add on which will allow you to spread the word pretty quickly, whether by email, social networking profile, or through your blog.

Using Facebook Pages To Promote Your Organization

You gotta love viral marketing.  Within a few short hours you can get hundreds of people to sit up and pay attention to what you have to say.

We have talked about Facebook a lot here on marketingHackz.  But do you really understand the true power of the social media platform?

Last week, we soft launched a Facebook page for an area college, Mercyhurst.  We made it publicly viewable (mistake #1) so that we could go over it with the college’s administration.  Well, to make a long story short, one person became a ‘fan’ (mistake #2).  People started flooding the page.

The next two days, we rushed around trying to bring various people up to speed on editing the page and moving stuff around.  It really was a chaotic experience trying to fit in to everyone’s schedule before the masses started seeing placeholder content.

What happened was one person subscribed.  A notification showed up in their mini-feed.  Two more people became a fan.  It showed up in their mini-feed.  And so on.

So now, a week later, 426 people have ‘fanned’ the page and their has been next to no real promotion!

The beautiful thing is we’re done with the Facebook page.  And now we can sit back and watch a real case study in action.  They have the tools to add events and message their fans and maintain the content.  Let’s see how they do!

If you have been thinking about getting a Facebook page for yourself of your business, let us know.  We’d be happy to put something together for you..

Get The Word Out With Buzz Marketing

Have you heard the latest news?  Probably.

Have you BEEN the latest news? Probably not.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Buzz Marketing.  It isn’t new — actually, it’s been around since well before the Internet.  Heck, it’s been around since before computers.  The only difference is that now, the Internet and computers make buzz marketing a lot more accessible to average companies.

It has many definitions that are all open to interpretation, but in a nutshell, buzz marketing is about making yourself or your product the subject of conversations.  Lots of them.  It could be based upon something that you do or something that you sell, something you produce or something you work with, but either way, buzz marketing is one of the best ways for certain companies to get the word out that they want and to get the exposure that they need.

Unlike other forms of Internet marketing like social media marketing or search engine optimization, buzz marketing isn’t for every business.  Some simply do not have a need to get “buzzed”.  Before a company decides whether or not they are “buzzworthy” they should ask themselves a few questions:

  1. Do I offer anything unique?
  2. If not, is anything about the way I offer it unique?
  3. If not, is anything about ME or anyone in the organization unique or interesting?

At this point, you should have been able to answer yes to one or more of these questions.  If not, perhaps buzz marketing isn’t for you.

Then again, it might be.  We’ll assume it is for now.

With that said, what happens in a buzz campaign.  Simply stated, news is made and put out into the world.  Through blogs, press releases, interviews, videos, and other media the news is created.  Then, it is put out for all of the world to see through social media.  That’s it.  It isn’t rocket science to understand, but it is extremely difficult to make it happen properly.

When Nike+ launched two years ago, there were many skeptics.  Other corporations have tried to create a strong social network for their users.  The results have been horrendous for most, but Nike has been able to build their brand and establish strong avenues of interactions with their customers through this social network.

What did they do that Coke, General Motors, and several other large corporations did not do?

First, they gave the platform connectivity and interactivity.  Using a device within the running shoes themselves, members can track every run they do and keep accurate records of how well they are doing.  This in itself has an appeal to those who are serious about running, but Nike+ took it a step further by allowing users to communicate with other runners around the globe.  The mutual interest that can often be called a passion gave the network the “legs” to bring people in and keep them coming back.

The second thing they did was give purpose to the network.  Through events that could only be coordinated online do to logistical challenges of multiple-locations worldwide, Nike+ made itself into a hub for runners to participate with distant peers towards common goals.  Earlier this year, nearly a million users logged on and signed up to run a 10K race.  It was sponsored by Nike simultaneously in 25 cities. Etiquette Is Key In Social Media

Let’s take two scenarios for example,

Conversation between John and Jane in the Real World,

Characters : John – a writer
Jane -editor of a well known magazine

At a party
John : Hi Jane! It is really nice to finally meet you. I have seen your editorial column in [magazine] and I truly enjoy it.
Jane : Ohh hi! Glad you enjoy my writing. Its always nice to get positive feedbacks.
John : So, what else is new? Anything new coming up for the magazine?
Jane : Not at the moment. But we have a few things planned which might take a while to implement.
John : Ohh ok. By the way, I was wondering if you would consider my article on [topic] for the next issue. It would be very kind of you.
Jane : I will see what I can do. I have got to run at the moment but it was really nice meeting you.

What happened in the scenario above is Jane ignored John as soon as he asked for a favor. This is because she can clearly see that the only reason he was talking with her was simply cause he wanted to get something out of her. Before we ask for anything we need to let the relationship mature. This is how it works in the real world when we connect with people face to face.

Conversation between John and Jane on The Web,

Characters : John : New blogger
Jane : Established blogger and an influential figure on the web

On Twitter
John : @Jane Really loved your article on how to build a community around your blog.
Jane : @John Glad you enjoyed it.
John : @Jane I have been following your blog for a while and it has been a great help
Jane : @John Thanks! I am glad you find my tips and suggestion helpful.

[John sends a Direct message to Jane on Twitter] – Hi Jane! Would it be possible to get a link back to one of my articles from your blog. I would really appreciate it.

John : @Jane Sent you a DM. Hope to hear back soon from you :)

What happened in this scenario? Same thing as the first one. Once Jane sees John’s DM, she decides to ignore his tweets. Once again she can clearly see that its all about what he can get out from her rather than building a solid relationship.

When it comes to networking, what works in the real world is exactly how it works on the web. Carry real world etiquette to the online world and you will be able to gain attention and be noticed. Its as simple as that.

Social Media Marketing – What Is It?

quick thought on social media marketing

The reason Social Media Marketing has peaked is because it gives businesses a chance to connect with their existing and potential clients on a personal level and vice versa. Social Media marketing isn’t about marketing your products and services directly. It is about marketing your business and brand through humanization of your company, by letting your consumers know that there is a person behind the company that is willing to talk, learn and engage with their potential customers into their day to day life. It is about engagement and participation on a personal level. I am more likely to buy from a company that is referred to me rather than shooting darts in the dark.

Social Media marketing is about humanization, personalization and building a community around your business to keep the word flowing about you/business through your own community.

Twitter – A Cluttered Billboard?

Twitter without a doubt is one of the best communication and networking tool available on the web. I enjoy it so much that the first thing I do before I even open my email is check my Twitter profile. I love to connect with others and participate. I love to take a deep look into other people’s lives as they share what they are doing and tie it in with mine to see how similar we are. All in all, Twitter has become an integral part of my online life.

I exist on Twitter to connect, to increase my knowledge on certain things and spread mine as well. However, Twitter lately has become a cluttered a billboard with links swarming from everywhere. Do I link my articles on twitter? You bet I do. But I do it because I think I put enough time participating and being a part of the community. I don’t just throw random links just for the sake of traffic.

How can I compare Twitter to a cluttered Billboard?

Out of 100 tweets 50 are bound to be promotional links that exist for the sake of traffic and nothing else. Not as bad as in real life but a billboard cluttered with ads usually have 80% of ads that doesn’t provide any value and exist just cause everyone else is using that space. Let Twitter be a communication tool to delve into others life as they share their personal lives, their thoughts and links on topics that matter. You do the same but don’t use it just because its a space everyone else is using. Don’t let it be a cluttered billboard.

Share your thoughts.

If you would like to connect with me on twitter please follow this link ritubpant. I have been pretty quite on twitter lately but I should be getting back to my normal twitter addiction soon ;-) .
