May I add one to you list:
- be relevant – because if you're not, you're spam and we hate spam.

You may and I appreciate it!!

That's a great one… Something I totally missed :0)

Nice post Jason! Another point which falls under give before getting is stay consistent. Building your business is all about brand recognition and for that to happen you must stay focused on your message and your audience.

There are millions of blogs out there and it is tempting to sign up for hundreds, but it is better just to stay grounded and actively participate in only a few that way you can build a following easier because you're focusing your efforts instead of spreading yourslef out too thin.

Another good idea by Seth Godin is to take into consideration the picture you use on your social media sites and what it says about you both personal and professionally.

April 6th, 2009 @9:34 pm

You're right. And really, that goes for anything. You want to stay focused on only a couple things to truly get the greatest benefit of all of them. I personally need to remember that :0)

And I need to update my Twitter pic! LOL

You and me both! It’s tempting to take on more and more projects for the thrill of creating and working on something new, but sometimes it is just too much. No harm in just taking a step back though. You never know what you’ll discover when you broaden your perspective.

Haha nice ;)

One of my favorite quotes of all time is by JRR Tolkien – "Around the corner there my wait a new road or a secret gate."

Gotta love that!

I often miss the most important item in a list when I try to build one. May be it's because it's the obvious one and we're always scanning for peripheral stuff ;-) .

@laurent
I couldn't agree more. Sometimes you just get so caught up in the little things its the big obvious ones that slip through the cracks. A method I find to help correct that is once you are done take a half hour to do something completely different. Surf the internet, talk to a co-worker anything to get your mind off of it. After your feel refreshed go back at your project and look over it again you are bound to find something.

Mine is Learn, Unlearn, Re- learn.

Learn – Spend some time up front to understand the basics. Know the technologies, the principles of communication, and the history of social media. Understand what your customers are using to solve their problems today and how your competitors are using social media to solve their problems.

Un-Learn – Whenever social media makes you uncomfortable, write down what it is you "know" is making you nervous. Based on what you "learned", consider "un-learning" or releasing this orthodoxy. You are going to have to change some of your long-held beliefs to be successful.

Re-Learn – Now that you've identified what's holding you back and created some holes of knowledge to fill, go out and re-learn what you're missing. You're obviously approaching advertising differently now, so now go do some research to see what tools and frameworks you need to apply going forward.

Great site! I really enjoy it!

April 7th, 2009 @4:53 am

Wow Ben that was really insightful comment. I have never really thought about un-learning what makes me nervous and then re-learning based on that. I will have to start adapting that attitude. I also subscribed to your blog some great content on there too!

April 7th, 2009 @12:21 pm

I have to agree with the unlearning as well.. It is imperative the re-examine some of your beliefs and be aware of the nature of social media. Oftentimes, this is one of the hardest things for clients and businesses to handle..

April 15th, 2009 @12:44 pm

Thanks for this info! As a CEO, I'm learning and building the framework for our consultant team. You're right on target about un-learning and re-learning. This media has changed so much in just the past 6 months that you need to keep up with it and relearn!

Hi Ravi – am a glad to run across someone else who is doing the smartappsportal.com business. I got it about 2 months ago. It took me about a month to get going because I am new to internet marketing but it is making good money now. Lets chat and share some ideas.

April 21st, 2009 @12:42 pm

Ronell and Ravi – is it a good business model? I always get a little jaded when I see "You'll make $100K in your first month!"

If it's worth it, I'd be interested in partnering up with one or both of you guys to build it out..

Hi, Nixyer,
It's the same case for me, I was surprised by the sentence “In social media persistence is everything” because it reminds me of my stress by starting online businesses. I actually experienced failures but happiness when I’ve gotten profits with smartappsportal.com was greatly helped me to forget this fear and encouraged me to continue.

April 22nd, 2009 @8:36 pm

It's interesting that you point out the stress of starting new businesses.. I have a site coming up soon – StartupChaos.com devoted to that very topic!

I am going to have to check out smartappsportal if so many people are recommending it..

April 22nd, 2009 @8:37 pm
