I agree that Marketing isn’t as hard as people make it to be. I also agree that many businesses try to make it much too complicated. However, I do not think that a business can put marketing "in a box."

I believe that a business must realize that everything that someone hears, sees, smells, touches and tastes about your company is marketing. If I walk into a business and the receptionist is dressed poorly and uses bad grammer when she speaks to me, I immediately get a bad impression of that company. If the offices are messy and dirty, I get a bad impression. If I call and get an automated sytem that offer memu choices that don't address my reason for the call, I get a very bad impression and get very upset.

Those kinds of factors (and many others) are part of the company's marketing. Marketing is not just a strategy developed and implemented by the "marketing department." EVERYONE in a company markets for the company. I have stopped doing business with companies because someone in the accounting, HR, or other department did not provide the proper service. I am willing to bet that people in those departments do not consider themselves to be involed in "marketing the comapany." I good company lets everyone know that marketing is part of their job.

You have very good blog and I enjoy reading it.
