Note : Here at marketinghackz we talk about, well, marketing. But sometimes it is necessary to talk other aspects of business as well. In this post we will talk a little about idea generation which is required in every phase of business. Whether you are planning on starting a new business or trying to market your business to a new crowd, without an idea nothing falls in place.
Ideas – they sprout from everywhere, while walking down the mall, while eating at a restaurant, while watching TV or whatever it is that you are doing. It’s just a matter of minutes for an idea to jump into your brain and make you think about turning something into reality.
It is somebody’s idea that has made it possible for us to watch movie on a portable DVD player, it is somebody’s idea that has allowed me to connect to the rest of the world via internet; and it is somebody’s idea that allows most of us to write articles without having much technical knowledge on how to create a blog or a website.
Some ideas turn into reality and make it big, whereas others just get buried deep into the pile of bad ideas. How exactly do we make an idea into reality? How do we decide which idea we should act upon and which one’s we should let go off? What is it that we need to do to make an idea take the leap from our brain into the world?
This post will highlight some things that might help do just that. Call it the life cycle of an idea which starts from the generation phase and ends with the completion.
Generate Ideas
The beginning of anything successful starts out with generating ideas. This is where you come up with an idea and start building your empire. This is the first step as this is where we realize what we can do and what the possibilities are.
This step is all about brainstorming and thinking about something that could prove to be worth your time and effort. Generate as many ideas as you can. Whether it’s starting a website design firm or becoming an independent web content writer, generate ideas on what you can do. Think, think, think and write all your ideas on a piece of paper.
Evaluate Pros and Cons
I call this the elimination approach. Idea generation in itself is not the key to coming up with something great. It’s getting rid of the ideas that might not prove to be as fruitful as the other one. During the idea generation phase, all you do is generate ideas.
This is one of the most important steps as this is where you decide your next move. Ideas are easy to come but we do need to weigh our options on what will benefit us the most. Take a look on the piece of paper where you wrote ideas and go through all your ideas. Weigh the pros and cons of each idea and cross out the one’s that seem a little out of reach or may appear to have less value in future. Now you are left with ideas that will provide the most value as you eliminated the ones that otherwise would have proved to be a waste of time.
Set Goals
The next step as you can see is goal setting. A lot of us tend to ignore the importance of setting goals. When we set goals we actually run after them as we are motivated to get to the finish line. While setting a goal prepare a time line and what you want to achieve within that time period. This will create a sense of urgency which acts as an immense motivation.
Goal setting serves as one of the most important part within the life cycle of an idea. Without setting goals it’s almost impossible to drive an idea to reality.
Prepare a To-Do-List
Now that you have set your goals, it’s time to plan a to do list. With each idea there are certain things that needs to be done. If you are planning to start a blog there are some aspect of it that needs to be planned.
A to do list allows you to plan everything ahead of time. Prepare your to do list depending on your priority. Your idea requires certain steps to become a reality. Keep in mind the urgency of each step and prepare a to do list accordingly. This will allow you to see what is important and what needs to be done each day.
Manage Time Effectively
“ 24 hours in a day just doesn’t seem to be enough.” This is one statement that I hear time after time. No matter what we do, the fact that each day consist of 24 hours is not going to change. The only thing we can change is how we manage time. For an idea to become a reality there needs to be an effective time management and we are the only one to maintain and integrate that into our idea.
We all face countless number of challenges each day ranging from family responsibilities to Television time. Between all our responsibilities and relaxation time we need to allocate a set time for our ideas so as to work on them. Without effective time management nothing can be done and the same applies for an idea to become a reality.
Develop a Productivity Strategy
We all seem to ensure our productivity by reading different articles and listening to podcasts each day. The key to being productive doesn’t lie in what we know but in what we do and how we do it. Whether we read 3 steps or 50 steps to productivity, ensuring maximum output from our efforts lies within us.
A productivity strategy is something that we need to figure out. What works best for me might not be the best option for you. I seem to work quite well at late hours and that is when I get most of my things done. You might be the other way around. Work out a time, a strategy on how you can really unleash the productivity beast. To turn your idea into reality and bring it into existence a productivity strategy is a must.
Take Appropriate Actions
Action – the six letter word is definitely one of the key elements for your idea to step out into public. One of the reasons most of us fail to turn our ideas into reality is because we fail to take appropriate actions.
We dive into all the steps but when it comes to taking action we seem to lose the touch. Without action nothing can be achieved. A food on the dining table, a cool article on a blog, and everything else requires action. Without action nothing can be attained, its the mantra we all need to live by.
I have followed these steps and so far every idea that I thought was viable and approachable has been a reality. Of course sometimes it’s hard to see what lies in the future but personally, I think following these steps can really get the ball rolling when it comes to seeing your idea become a reality.
These are the steps that I follow and thought I would share it with you as well. I am sure you have your methods and steps that you take in making an idea come out in the real world. This rule applies to marketing as well. Before we promote our products or services if we lay out an idea and follow these steps, I am sure it can turn into a reality, reality being that you gain more customers because of a planned process which starts from generating ideas.

Your statement “One of the reasons most of us fail to turn our ideas into reality is because we fail to take appropriate actions” is what I believe to be the biggest reason that an idea goes nowhere. I truly beleive that everyone has 2 or 3 ideas in their lifetime that could make them financially secure for the rest of their lives. They simply fail to take ACTION. They come up with excuses as to why they should not act (Somebody probably already thought of it; I don’t have time; I don’t have the money to develop it; etc. etc.). I believe that the main different between success and failure is “ACTION.”
