Facebook Marketing

In the words of Gary V, Facebook marketing is crushing it right now.  Not only are more people signing up for Facebook everyday than any other service online, the demographic of its users are gettiing wider and wider.

You know what that means for us as marketers?  A primary method of marketing!

By know you now about Facebook.  You’ve probably also heard about Facebook marketing.  What I want to do is take you on a little tour of what Facebook marketing can do for you business, how much it costs, and what kind of skills you’ll require.

Facebook Marketing – An Introduction

First thing’s first.  Facebook marketing is not meant to be a spam tool.  Nor is any other social media marketing platform for that matter.  There are two very distinct types of Facebook marketing – free and paid.

Free Facebook Marketing

The free type of Facebook marketing is where you set up a profile and add friends, communicate and hang out.  Now, I’m sure you’re thinking, “He didn’t say anything about spreading his marketing message…”  You’re right.  I didn’t!

The point to it being free is you have to ‘enter the conversation.’  Be a good friend.  Help people solve problems.  Then, and only then, you can send them a link to your stuff.  Or, if people are really interested, they will have already visited your profile to learn more about what you do.

There is a few very cool components that let you do your Facebook marketing very efficiently and very free..  Here’s a quick rundown of what some of those ninja Facebook Marketing tactics are:

  • Facebook Groups – start a group that has something to do with your business.  Come up with a clever name though.  Facebook has been banning groups that are too generic (ie. Marketing, Business Coaching, etc).
  • Facebook Pages – Facebook pages are kind of like profiles but tied to businesses.  The only major difference is rather than ‘friend’ someone, they can ‘like’ you or give you a thumbs up.  This is very cool because it isn’t a huge committment on the part of a visitor.  They don’t have to ‘friend you’ to keep in touch.
  • Facebook Applications – Facebook Apps are growing very, very commonplace.  Everytime you turn around there’s a status update from a Facebook game or some community internal to Facebook.  If you’re overly ambitious and you’ve got a target market, you can have a Facebook app built for your business!

This is by no means an exhaustive list of Facebook Marketing techniques.  I’ll have links below where you can go for more information.  I just wanted to dispel any Facebook Marketing myths while I still had your attention :0)

Facebook Marketing – The Paid Version

Who would want to have anything to do with paying for Facebook Marketing when you can get it for free?  Ummm..  Me.  Seriously!

We talked about the growing demographic that visits Facebook every day.  In fact, they hang out there on average 18 minutes a day and log in up to 4 times thoughout the day.  As marketers, those statistics should make us pretty excited.

The paid version of Facebook Marketing is… You guessed it…  The ads on the right-hand side of the screen.  Those quirky things that have an image and a few lines of text.

You know what?  I love them.  You wouldn’t believe how targeted you can make those ads to a browser..  Imagine this.  You had an idea of what your ideal prospect was in your head.  Their favorite book. Their favorite TV show. Their age and sex.  Whether they were married or not.

Now, imagine being able to exactly pinpoint that person and show them an ad.

Guess what?  You can do it in Facebook.  For pennies!

Facebook Ads (paid Facebook Marketing) is how you do it.  You set up a simple ad, type in your landing page and set your budget.  All that’s left is for the ad to get approved!

The best part is you ONLY get charged when someone clicks your ad!  So if you have an opt-in list on the other side of the ad, you’re growing your prospect list and making money directly off a Facebook AD!

Facebook Marketing – Why I like Facebook Ads

I’m not going to tell you I’m the kind of Facebook Marketing.  I’m not.  In fact, I set up my campaigns, tweak them a bit and let them run.  I might log in to Facebook every few days to say hi to my friends and check my stats (aka. make sure I’m not blowing money without a steady return on investment).  That’s it though.

I used to get into the whole free Facebook Marketing thing but soon realized it was a waste of time.  Why spend hours and hours a day trying to get one client when you could spend $5 or $10 and get multiple?

It really bothers me when all I see is marketing message after marketing message from a ‘friend’ in my status feed.  That’s not why people congregate at Facebook.. They’re there to hang out and catch up with loved ones!

To me, the paid Facebook Marketing ads are perfect because if someone is looking for answers or products, the click it.  It’s not obtrusive and in no way changes the user experience.

Facebook Marketing – Where It’s Going

Facebook is in no way shying away from paid ads.  It’s one of the only social networks that is profitable right now because they were smart and set up their own ad platform.  I imagine they will change in time, but right now the ads are easy to set up and cheap to get going.

I have heard that Facebook is launching it’s own operating system to rival Microsoft soon – in which case I’m sure they will have ad placements right on the desktop.  It’ll be interesting to see how that’s going to work!

Also, look for Facebook Marketing on mobile devices before too long.  With the popularity of the Android platform on all the major cellular providers (and Facebook being a bundled app) there are going to be mobile sponsorship opportunities before long.
