While the content is good, the title grates on my ability to agree. Personal branding is something that I see as a BAD thing. If you’ve branded yourself, you can’t step away from your business - ever.

Steve Jobs didn’t do personal branding. He did BUSINESS branding. He can step away. Apple and Mac live on.

Aim for business branding any day. Not personal.

@ James : It’s nice to see you stop by to comment. Been a while since we have seen you here ;-) . You have got a solid point and although that’s the message I was trying to send in terms of branding my wording and title must have been misleading for which I apologize.

While i do agree with this post and the comment made disagreeing with it, the one thing you have to consider is WHEN? If you are working for a major company and brand yourself as a big marketing guru, then yes, you cant walk away from that because thats what everyone will associate you with. But what about students? Early on personal branding is a MUST, when you get out of college you want to be seen as a leader, someone who takes charge and follows though, and the best part is that you have no allegiance to anyone or anything. As James said, personal branding later in the game could be dangerous depending on what you want to do, but branding yourself before the game even start opens up a variety of possibilities.
