Social Media today has evolved faster than expected. As a matter of fact, there is at least one social media site born each week. Some get lost in the crowded social media market and some manage to steal our attention and time. We get hooked. We start exploring opportunities to maimize the exposure and revenue possibilities.
Although Social Media is exploited to some extent, it still stands as one of the most viable marketing option on the web. Whether its content on a blog or a product from an online catalog, social media can help leverage both traffic and sales.
The key to establishing yourself on a social media site is by creating a strong profile or portraying yourself as a brand within the community. If you look at some of the users on some bigger social media sites such as StumbleUpon and Digg, you can see some users are often referred to as power users. These users have been able to gain the attention from the community due to their active participation and quality submissions. The networking aspect of social media is what tends to garner the attention of most web users. Without networking no business can succeed and the same goes true for creating social media existence.
Social Media can be used in two ways to generate revenue and market what it is that you are trying to promote. The first is where you generate revenue indirectly and the second where you earn direct revenue. To better explain these two approach let’s take a look at the examples below.
Example # 1
Social media is used by most blogs and sites to promote their content. Although they provide free content social media does help them earn revenue indirectly. Everytime a blog’s content does well on social media the traffic gained through a particular article can very well convert into subscribers. Even if it doesn’t it still is traffic which allows the blog/site to present themselves as a high trafficked site. This allows them to pull in advertisers which results in revenue, as you know it. As a matter of fact many blogs and sites wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for social media.
With social media you can promote your content on your blog/site and pull in advertisers from the traffic the free content brings in. Of course, quality once again is key. This is one way social media can be utilized to earn revenue and market your content or business.
Example # 2
The second approach to earning direct revenue is by promoting products directly on social media. Although most people do not see social media being prone to product purchase and all, it is. If you have a product that is unique, quality and fills in the void in a certain market it is very likely that the social media crowd will be susceptible to purchase that particular product.
With social media its all about traffic first and having your content and product good enough to compel the traffic to convert. The key to social media marketing is making a name for yourself within the community and interacting. Create something compelling and let the social media do the rest for you.
This is why social media marketing rocks. Most of the time someone else does the promotion for you and you don’t even know about it. The key to utilizing social media is quality and consistency and knowing the community within each social media site.

Great website, I have been debating for a while if social media traffic actually converts. I think it only converts when marketers are focused on a niche market - meaning people who are actually looking for a solution to a problem. But just to market via social media like dropping a bomb - if that type of marketing converts? In my opinion not so well. Its needs to be like missle marketing - directly to those who are seeking a solution.
